4 killed protesting mine of former Stratus owner
According to an article in the New York Times:
Police and rock throwing demonstrators clashed during a protest against the American mining company, Freeport-McMoRan, leaving three policemen and one Air Force officer dead in the remote province of Papua, witnesses and officials said.
Freeport McMoRan was originally the parent company of Stratus Properties - the partner in AMD’s proposed move to Southwest Austin. Stratus still has ties to Freeport McMoRan. AMD continues to defend their move by using misleading statements, and has not addressed the issue of partnering with a company known around the world for their human rights violations.
According to the Times article, the “Justice Department has said it is investigating whether payments made by Freeport to individual Indonesian soldiers and military units from 1998 to 2004 were in breach of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The Securities and Exchange Commission, too, said that it is investigating whether the company failed to fully disclose the payments to its shareholders.”
